Who We Are
The focus of the Black Insurance Industry Collective™ (BIIC®) is to accelerate the advancement of Black professionals with the end goal of increasing the representation of Black leaders at the mid-to-executive level in the insurance industry. Our vision is to support the development of Black talent in the insurance industry by providing educational opportunities, networking, and training opportunities.
Our Story
In 2020, a group of racially diverse insurance industry leaders gathered to address the challenge of increasing the representation of people of color within the insurance industry. Following this meeting, we developed a working group involving 30 diverse industry executives who validated both the needs and objectives of this initiative. Their deliberations led to the creation of the Black Insurance Industry Collective (BIIC) whose goals are to accelerate the advancement of Black professionals in the insurance industry and increase the representation of Black leaders at the executive level.
This is the first industry-fueled effort solely dedicated to the development of black professionals. The BIIC vision was further refined with input from additional insurance professionals, who through working group discussions, analyzing data and benchmarking other programs and initiatives, extrapolated the work into three key pillars:
Leadership Development
Mentorship and Sponsorship
Networking
Over the last two years, the BIIC has welcomed numerous partners to join in advancing this vision, hosted multiple DEI Roundtable events and webinars, and successfully launched two cohorts of the BIIC Executive Leadership Program in collaboration with Darden Executive Leadership & Lifelong Learning. In 2023, the BIIC was honored to be the Diversity and Inclusion Industry Partner Award winner for the 2023 DEI: Expanding Opportunity in Insurance Conference.
To advance our vision, we are pleased to announce that the BIIC, a newly formed non-profit organization affiliated with The Institutes, has been created as a 501 C (6) not-for-profit organization. The BIIC is designed to address the unique, cultural, mental, and psychological experiences and challenges encountered by Black professionals in the industry with a strong focus on retaining and advancing top talent.
